Here's the international trailer for Lars Von Trier's latest melodrama, the unusually cerebral looking "Melancholia," with Kirsten Dunst front and center as the Danish provocateur's latest object of ridicule. Resurrected from her genital mutilation death in "Antichrist," Charlotte Gainsbourg looks to get considerably less violent attention from Von Trier in "Melancholia," playing stable sister to loose cannon newlywed Dunst, who gets hitched to Erik from "True Blood" (lucky little bitch!!!) then becomes bewitched by some supposedly imminent interplanetary collision.
Von Trier is heading back to Cannes with this one, two years after his notorious egomaniacal press junket antics following the premiere of "Antichrist." Gainsbourg won Best Actress from the jury though, and she certainly deserved it. I'll see anything Von Trier makes because no matter how brutally explored, because even when he's forces his heroine to cut her husband's penis off with rusty shears before taking a clipper to her own clitoris, it's as visceral as art gets. No U.S.distributor for "Melancholia" yet, but expect an announcement sometime next month once it screens on the Croisette and its commercial prospects are evaluated (which, outside of Europe, will fall somewhere between slim and nil).
