It is a sad day.
Turquoise Flamingo in Cork have announced that they will be closing their doors this year. I don't get down to Cork often myself but when I do I have dropped in to see the shop. It's a real shame. As usual, the recession claims another victim as independent retailers have an extremely tough time of it at the moment.
I know its tempting to go to Topshop or River Island but there are a wave of Independent stores with a whole host of vintage treasures and these are the stores that really need your help. Retail space, insurance, wages and electricity costs are just some of the highest costs. By buying local, you are supporting jobs, taxes and sending a message that we do not want our high street entirely branded.
Imagine an entirely branded high street? You have no individuality, no personality and no hope of setting up your own business because its too difficult to run. Personally, I want a high street with choice not chains. I want to be able to go independent should I want to.
So while we (and indeed a very close friend of mine who is obsessed with the store) will miss Turquoise Flamingo, it is a very strong message to us all. Buy local and support local enterprise otherwise, there will be more like this.
